There is an affidavit on file in the Shetland Islands, north of Scotland, whereby a man claims that in 1833 he was deep sea fishing apprx 30-60 miles from land.He had hooked a creature about 3 ft long, and 30 inches in circumference at the broadest part, which was across the shoulders. Navel upwards it resembled a woman, with ample breasts. 9 inch arms were attached as well as wrists and hands that resembled humans. Five fingers were noted. The arms were little and posistioned close on the outsides of the breasts, on the corner of each shoulder was a round fin, which if was extended could cover both breasts and arms.Reported a short neck, a head about the length of a man's,but somewhat pointed at the crown. Blue eyes, more in resemblance of human as opposed to a fish. No nose, but rather two orifices, and a mouth large enough to admit a man's fist. No ears. White skin, on the front, back skin was more grey in color, like a fish. Tail fin 6 inches in breadth. From the navel down the body appeared to taper, growing increasingly smaller. Between the nose orifices, a flap of what resembled gristle at about 9 inches long was present. Similar "organs" were present on the side of the head but were considerably smaller. He reports that the men spoke to the creature and it spoke back, and in doing so moved it's bristles. They supposed the creauture could hear with them. No observation of the teeth, nor genitalia. No hair apparent on the body which was soft and slimy in texture. Because they believed it to be unlucky to kill a mermaid, and after having kept it aboard the boat for some time, the creature was then released back into the sea. Reports continued off the coast of
Scotland well into the twentieth century.
More recently there have been reported sightings off the coast of Australia, however I have more research to do in order to coroborate that.
