Near Death Experiences

The Near Death Experience or NDE hasbeen reported for many years. The most famous NDE reports were made by Betty J Eadie in her book "Embraced By the Light" and by Dannion Brinkley who wrote "Saved by the Light". In both these accounts and most others there is a typical account of what follows after taking the last breath. Usually there is first the sensation of being outside one's own body. One usually looks down and remarks about the body's appearance and then feel pity for it. Following this is usually a tunnel which is relatively dark, whereby the newly released soul feels rather than sees the presence of other souls. At thefarthest point of the tunnel is a bright white light more stunning than any light beheld with human eyes. As the soul moves further up the tunnel the light grows until it is all consuming. Upon entering the light there is generally a flood of feelings and emotions, such as warmth, the feeling of being embraced or loved, and safety. Jesus is often reported, however for people who follow other faiths, the manifestations of their belief systems are usually what they see. The most common report however, besides the light, is the seeing and speaking to dead relatives or friends. The dead appear to be happy and sometimes concerned, and in all cases they are told that it is not their time and they must return. In Dannion Brinkley's case and in Betty Eadie's there was a "Life Review" in which the NDEer reviews every facet of their life, and feel how itaffected every person they encountered in every moment. They vividly live through the "ripple effect" and gain a new understanding into what kind of person they have been. There is usually a self judging moment, where they feel immense guilt for the wrongs they have commited.

This is not the only common NDE experience however. Many people have claimed instead to arrive in a place considered to be Hell. They report most frequently the visuals of people or beasts clustering around them, who then begin to scratch and bite at and into their flesh. They experience immense pain, face beasts they have never witnessed before. They feel overwhelming fear, and in one account a man began to pray and then he ascended into light, rescued from the gates of hell by the savior, Jesus Christ.

The interesting thing to note is that these accounts are eerily similar, no matter what race, nationality, or religious background the NDEer has. This is a phenomenon experienced on every part of the globe, and in many ways a comforting promise of life after death.

However, science does love to debunk the mystical side of life, and more often than not comes up with explanaitions. Some explanations are somewhat outlandish while others make a disheartening sort of sense. It has been proven in the case of astronauts, that when thebrain is deprived of oxygen or outside stimuli it begins to perform curious functions that coincide almost exactly to the common NDE. There is a tunnel sensation, followed by blissful feelings.

Scientists studying the phenomenon, propose that without outside stimuli the brain becomes confused and "freaks out" for a moment thereby causing the tunnel sensation. Then when it finds nothing to focus on it uses stored stimuli, or memories to create the illusion of stimuli. They argue that this is why people report seeing dead loved ones. It is a very compelling argument worth consideration. However, there have been no reports of someone seeing their alive loved ones, who would be just as memorable if not more so. In conclusion, one can only decide for themselves what they believe, but personally, I think there is credence to the thousands of NDE reports over just the last thirty years. Perhaps the afterlife is not determined by religion, but more by the contents of one's deeds and intentions. This does not explain the hellish experiences, but perhaps the man mentioned before gives us a clue on how to save ourselves should we find ourselves at the gates of hell. We have but to reach out, and ask for mercy.
