“The inquiry was relegated to the Parliament of Bordeaux, and on the 6th of September 1503, President Dassis pronounced sentence upon the loup-garou. The utmost clemency was shown. Taken into consideration his youth and extreme ignorance Jean Grenier was ordered to be strictly enclosed in the Franciscan friary of S. Michael the Archangel, a house of the stricter Observance, at Bordeaux, being warned that any attempt to escape would be punished by the gallows without hope of remission or stay.

Pierre de Lancre, who has left us a very simple account of the whole case, visited the loup-garou at S. Michaels in the year of 1610, and found that he was a lean and gaunt lad, with small deep-set black eyes that glared fiercely. He had long sharp teeth, some of which were white like fangs, others black and broken, whilst his hands wee almost like claws with horrid crooked nails. He loved to hear and talk of wolves, often fell upon all fours, moving with extraordinary agility and seemingly with with greater ease than when he walked upright as a man. The fathers remarked that at first, at least, he rejected simple plain food for foulest offal. De Lancre calls attention to the fact that that Grenier or Garnier seems for some reason to be a name not infrequently borne by werewolves.” Source

The beast of Gevaudan:

A Cryptozoological take on the beast of Gevaudan

Between 1764 and 1770 in the former French providence of Gevaudan, there was a series of vicious attacks and murders which was associated with a man eating wolf like animal. The beast was reported by eyewitnesses to have sharp formidable teeth and an immense tail. It was accompanied by a most foul odor. There were discrepancies on the coloring of the beast, but most reported it was a reddish color with a black stripe down its back. In some accounts it was reported to have hooves. Some have speculated that it could be a prehistoric creature known as the Mesonychid which is described here. Many mobs and farmers with pitchforks set out in search of the beast, but he could never be found. The creature was reported to specifically target humans, avoiding cattle and other livestock completely. On January 12, 1765 Jacques Portefaix and six friends who included girls were attacked by the beast, but managed to drive it off by staying clustered as a group. This caught the attention of King Louis XV who awarded Jacques 300 livres and gave 300 more to be spread amongst those that were in his group, he also had Jacques educated at the state's expense. The King then hired two professional wolf hunters Jean-Charles-Marc-Antoine Vaumesle s'Enneval and his son Jean-Francois to kill the creature They brought with them eight bloodhounds who had been trained specifically in wolf hunting. They spent several months hunting many wolves, believing them to be the creature reported. However, when the attacks continued, they were replaced by Francois Antoine the King's Lieutenant of the hunt. He killed an unprecedented large gray wolf. It was agreed that this was indeed a very large wolf, and Antoine stated officially that he had never seen a wolf such as this one. Because of this he believed this to be the monster inflicting the attacks. The animal was then identified by survivors of the attacks, who recognized scars on the creatures body caused by the victims defending themselves. There is discrepancy as to what was actually done with the wolf, some say it was stuffed, others say it was burned on site, and others still say it was carried around the countryside before being buried. However, on December 2, 1765 another attack on two children who were severely injured was reported, and even more attacks resulting in death persisted.A second beast fitting the description of the first was sighted alive at a gentleman's club outside Gevaudan August of 1767. Jean Chastel is credited for killing it with silver bullets of his own manufacture. However, much controversy surrounded Jean Chastel's success. Because he had been sitting reading his bible when the beast approached, yet the wolf did not attack him which many found peculiar. Chastel shot the wolf as soon as he had finished reading. This led many to believe that Chastel had trained the animals or perhaps was the beast himself.
